The UACES-Thomson Reuters ‘Reporting Europe’ Prize 2010 honours excellence in reporting on the European Union in the English-speaking media during 2009.

James Kanter, accepting the 2009 prize
Many in the press may be unaware of the impact they have upon the academic community, and the existence of UACES as an extensive, non-partisan and institutionally neutral association of expertise on European issues. The 2010 UACES-Thomson Reuters ‘Reporting Europe’ Prize acknowledges high quality, informed journalism on any aspect of the EU from either a positive or critical perspective during 2009.
The Prize, which is worth £500, is awarded annually to an individual journalist for a single piece of work, or a series of pieces, which are judged to be of outstanding quality. Any English-language print, radio, television or blog entry by a single author will be accepted. Where the material nominated is under 1000 words, a series of related pieces should be submitted.
The deadline for nominations is 8 February 2010.
For further details, and to download a nomination form, please visit the UACES website.

Setting aside the logical predictability models – What is it that influences our decisionmaking? – Is it our historical and cultural background? Pictures and images in newspapers, at Websites, elsewhere? The people we communicate with? Or the music we hear? All of those? Something else?
How much is pure empirical evidence part of even our (legal) [...]

Last week’s flurry of media outpourings on Daniel Hannan’s comments on the NHS were interesting for several reasons. Firstly, my best friend went to university with him and we both derive much pleasure from watching his (Hannan’s) developing career.
Secondly, and more relevantly for the rest of you, it speaks to some of the comments I’ve [...]

My sister’s husband, Andreas, is a teacher. He and his colleague recently finished a video introducing their school (actually a film about their school): Im Trüben gefischt:
My sister Kristina is a teacher, too.

as important guarantors of democracy.
The freedom of thought in Article 9 of the ECHR is closely linked to other provisions in the ECHR, one of those being the freedom of expression.
In the ECHR, Article 10 (1) says:
„1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to [...]

A few pointers for newcomers to blogging, as well as where to find other good Europe-focussed blogs to spark ideas

I recently read an e-book on Logical Models in Social Sciences, by Rein Taagepera, and thought that since I already started with social policy issues here, and being a lawyer from Estonia, I could introduce the thought of some Estonian authors.
The referred book made me think that if there is an order in the Universe, [...]

I noticed this today from EUObserver.com: one of the Czech ODS MEPs cycled from Prague to Strasbourg and has spent all week in his ’skin-tight red lycra’. Edvard Kozusnik is clearly a man with a plan, or possible a gimmick, depending on how you look at it.
As a keen cyclist myself, I know that lycra [...]
