Many in the press may be unaware of the impact they have upon the academic community, and the existence of UACES as an extensive, non-partisan and institutionally neutral association of expertise on European issues. The 2010 UACES-Thomson Reuters ‘Reporting Europe’ Prize acknowledges high quality, informed journalism on any aspect of the EU from either a positive or critical perspective during 2009.

The Prize, which is worth £500, is awarded annually to an individual journalist for a single piece of work, or a series of pieces, which are judged to be of outstanding quality. Any English-language print, radio, television or blog entry by a single author will be accepted. Where the material nominated is under 1000 words, a series of related pieces should be submitted.

The deadline for nominations is 8 February 2010.

For further details, and to download a nomination form, please visit the UACES website.

Perceptions of Democratisation in the Middle East
This conference was aimed at bringing together key voices from the Middle East and Europe to elucidate precisely what democracy means for the people in the former region.
Dr Michelle Pace inaugurated the conference by providing the backdrop to her project: a belief that the conceptual puzzles of democracy need [...]

Setting aside the logical predictability models – What is it that influences our decisionmaking? – Is it our historical and cultural background? Pictures and images in newspapers, at Websites, elsewhere? The people we communicate with? Or the music we hear? All of those? Something else?
How much is pure empirical evidence part of even our (legal) [...]

Last week’s  flurry of media outpourings on Daniel Hannan’s comments on the NHS were interesting for several reasons.  Firstly, my best friend went to university with him and we both derive much pleasure from watching his (Hannan’s) developing career.
Secondly, and more relevantly for the rest of you, it speaks to some of the comments I’ve [...]

Remarks by William Horsley, Chairman of the Association of European Journalists (UK) and former BBC correspondent at the UACES-Thomson Reuters ‘Reporting Europe’ Award 2009.
Many thanks for giving me the chance this evening to celebrate with you the joys and wonders of good journalism, especially the reporting of Europe. I congratulate all those whose work has [...]

My sister’s husband, Andreas, is a teacher. He and his colleague recently finished a video introducing their school (actually a film about their school): Im Trüben gefischt:

My sister Kristina is a teacher, too.

You might have noticed that everything in blogging is a bit different from traditional ways of publishing. So, this should be the first post in a small series that covers some basic concepts [...]

as important guarantors of democracy.

The freedom of thought in Article 9 of the ECHR is closely linked to other provisions in the ECHR, one of those being the freedom of expression.

In the ECHR, Article 10 (1) says:

„1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to [...]

A few pointers for newcomers to blogging, as well as where to find other good Europe-focussed blogs to spark ideas

I recently read an e-book on Logical Models in Social Sciences, by Rein Taagepera, and thought that since I already started with social policy issues here, and being a lawyer from Estonia, I could introduce the thought of some Estonian authors.

The referred book made me think that if there is an order in the Universe, [...]

I noticed this today from EUObserver.com: one of the Czech ODS MEPs cycled from Prague to Strasbourg and has spent all week in his ’skin-tight red lycra’. Edvard Kozusnik is clearly a man with a plan, or possible a gimmick, depending on how you look at it.
As a keen cyclist myself, I know that lycra [...]

Well , too much hungry for oil and for the strengthen of british influence than the selfdeterminatio you had fighted for. I guess the next move of yours will be the expulsion of inhabitants, like you did in Did in Diego Garcia. Anyway you've been fooled, the inhabitants of malvinas are less than 50% of total population, the rest are people who went ther […]

James, A well argued piece that was compelling throughout. I whole-heartedly agree that European support for Britain in this matter is essential. Hopefully, this would see considerable emphasis placed on our relationship with Europe and not America. It would also strengthen the British position and influence within Europe. Well done, Tim […]

James: I'm not sure the British army would appreciate being lumped in as 'a naval squadron' (your brief reference to 1982). The liners QEII and Canberra were requisitioned to carry the troops over: commandos, parachute regiment, infantry and Gurkhas. Apart from that, I agree with your overall assessment. The British should get out of their ou […]

Notwithstanding your item 8, van Rompuy seems to be setting out his own idea of what his job should be. His speech this last week showed some of the key strands of his thinking. First, he appears to setting out the agenda for the future of the EU as an international player (and in the process very delicately treads on many national leaders' toes). Sec […]
